- What are the credentials of the coach you are considering? Some life coaches get certified in a short program that is not credentialed by The International Coach Federation (ICF). For example, in addition to being a License Marriage and Family Therapist, which took years or training and passing a National Board Exam, I also attended 6 months intensive training with the Institute for Life Coach Training, which is accredited by ICF.
- What experience does the coach have with your particular problem or issue that you need help with? Again, I have over 20 years of experience with helping people, and more specifically, I have been studying different healing modalities over 15 years to help people get rid of stress, as well as anxiety and depression associated with it.
- What are some policies and procedures? Is money refundable and does the coach have a way of addressing concerns? I offer my clients a “30 day Happy Client Guarantee” in case they find out after working with me for a month that it is not a good fit (so far I never had to exercise this option).
- Does the coach keep investing in his/her own professional and personal development? I continually update my skills and also work with a coach myself, as needed. We all need somebody to keep us on our track and keep us accountable.
While therapy is more focused on relieving symptoms, such as anxiety, depression, or challenging relationships, coaching is a proactive and goal centered approach that centers on the client’s strengths, potentials, and abilities. Prior to starting a coaching program, the client completes and signs the coaching agreement. Sessions are typically 30-45 minutes long and they are generally conducted via phone, Skype or at times in person.
Working collaboratively with a client, individualized goals are formulated that serve as a catalyst for change. Prior to each session, the client completes a coaching prep form that he or she emails to me the evening before in order to maximize the benefits of the coaching session.
Since typically it takes about 90 days to change behaviors and belief patterns, it is highly recommended to do at least a 90 day program with one session per week. Several coaching packages are available which can be customized to the client’s needs and they also include specials such as a free facebook group, a free attendance at one of my events, and one special session of Neuro-Linguistic Programming or Hypnosis; or even a session with a nutrition or fitness expert.
